FRANCISKA JANKOWSKI was born February 11, 1871 in Charlub, Poland, the 9th child of CONSTANTIN JANKOWSKI and BARBARA FRACKOWIAK. She was baptized in the Catholic Church in Mchy, Poland on February 12, 1871. Francisca immigrated to America in 1889, along with several family members, departing from Bremen, Germany, and arriving in Baltimore on September 12th aboard the S.S. Rhein. She was 18 years old at the time and single.
The family made their way to Rolling, Wisconsin, near Antigo, where they bought land and took to farming. At the age of 22, Franciska married Ignatz Pawlak on April 1, 1893 in Antigo, Wisconsin. Ignatz had immigrated to the United States sometime between 1886 and 1890 from Gola, Poland, in the vicinity of Charlub. He was a blacksmith as well as a farmer. Francisca gave birth to at least 4 children (1930 census says 5). All but 2 of the children, Frank and Helen, died at young ages.
At some point, the Pawlak family moved off the farm and into the city of Antigo. In 1910, they resided at 623 Edison Street in Antigo. The 1920 and 1930 censuses show them residing at 803 Clermont Street in Antigo. Ignatz died at the age of 72 on October 16, 1940 in Antigo. A few years later, on January 24, 1943, Francisca died. She was 71 years old. Both are buried in the Queen of Peace Cemetery in Antigo.
